Moving flat in Bratislava: a week-by-week plan

Moving flat in Bratislava most often goes wrong on three things: a removal van booked too late, boxes packed on the last night, and the days when the old flat has to be handed back before the new one is ready. The first two are solved by a plan, the third by a place for your things for the few weeks between the two flats.

Below is a week-by-week moving plan, how to choose a removal company, how to pack and where to put your things when the dates do not meet. I will say it plainly: we do not move anything, we rent storage units. When you rent a unit, though, you can request a paid transport partner.

Handing back the old flat before the new one is ready?

Pick a location and see the free units for one room or a whole flat.

Eight to six weeks before the move

  • Set the dates for handing back the old flat and getting the keys to the new one. If they do not overlap, you already know how many days you need a place for your things.
  • Ask for two or three quotes from removal companies. The price depends on the hours, the volume, stairs without a lift and the distance, so ask for a quote after a visit or from a list of your things, not blind.
  • Go through the flat and sort everything into three piles: moving, selling or giving away, throwing out. Every item that stays behind saves an hour of the movers' work.
  • Find out where the van can stop at both buildings and whether you need a permit or an arrangement with the building manager.

Four weeks before the move

  • Confirm the removal company and the date. Weekends and the end of the month go first.
  • Get boxes, tape and a marker. Small boxes for books and dishes, big ones for textiles and light things.
  • Start packing seasonal things: winter or summer clothes, skis, decorations, books you are not reading. If you will not need them in the new flat straight away either, they can go straight into storage.
  • Decide on storage if there will be days between the flats when the furniture has nowhere to stand. We cover this in detail in our article on where to store your things between two flats.

Two weeks before the move

  • Electricity, gas, internet: arrange the final readings and the end of the contracts at the old flat and the start at the new one.
  • Address: change your delivery address with banks, your insurer, your employer and online shops, and set up mail forwarding if you need it.
  • Renting a unit: a unit is rented online in about 10 minutes and you choose the start date, so it can be ready on the very day the first things leave the flat.
  • The lift: in a block of flats, agree with the manager or the neighbours when the lift will be busy with your move.

The last week

  • Pack room by room and write on every box the room it goes to and a short list of what is inside. Then you do not have to open every box in the new flat to find the right one.
  • Take the furniture apart: wardrobes, beds, tables. Screws into a small bag, and tape the bag to the part they came from.
  • Appliances: drain the washing machine and the dishwasher, defrost the fridge and leave it to dry with the door open. What to do with them when they go into storage for a while is in our article on how to store household appliances.
  • A first-night box: documents, chargers, medicines, bedding, towels, basic tools and something to eat. It travels with you in the car, not with the movers.

Moving day and the first days after

In the morning take photos of the old flat and the meters. Show the movers what goes to the new flat and what goes into storage, and if both, let the van go to the unit first: what was loaded last comes off first. In the unit put heavy and unneeded things at the back and whatever you will take out first by the door.

In the new flat put the beds together and unpack the kitchen first; the rest can wait. A change of permanent residence (trvalý pobyt) is reported at the municipal or district office for the new address, and then you update the address wherever you only changed it temporarily.

Where to put your things when the dates do not meet

The old flat has to be handed back on Friday and the new one is ready in three weeks, or it is still being painted and floored. Then you need a place for furniture and boxes for a few weeks. Unit size by our guide:

  • 3 to 5 m²: the dismantled furniture of one room, a fridge or a washing machine and boxes.
  • 5 to 7 m²: the contents of a studio or one-bedroom flat.
  • 7 to 12 m²: a two-bedroom flat including appliances, beds and wardrobes.
  • 12 m² and more: a three-bedroom flat.

For a move the doors and the access matter too. Indoor units have doors of 0.80 × 1.95 m, ordinary container storage units 0.80 × 2.00 m, and the 14.40 m² units and N29 in Nitra have double doors of 2.25 × 2.30 m that a sofa goes through. At Pionierska, at Dúbravka (unit D4), at Tomášikova and in Nitra there are free ground-floor units and you drive up to the door or into the site. What furniture copes with in an unheated container and what belongs in an indoor unit is in our article on where to store furniture during a renovation.

A unit exactly until the day you get the keys?

Pick a location, set the end of the rental to the date you need and see the price before you pay.

What it costs on 5 November 2026

The shortest rental is one month. If you know the day you get the keys to the new flat, set the end of the rental exactly to that day: it has to be at least 31 days after the start and you pay only for those days. Six weeks (42 days) in unit D4 comes to 149.21€, two whole months would be 216€. If the new flat is delayed, you extend the rental in your account, by at least 30 days. How the deposit and a short rental work is in our article on short-term storage rental.

Prices exclude VAT. 23% VAT is added where the location's landlord is VAT registered: always in Nitra, in Bratislava for companies with a VAT number. Per month on a 1, 3 and 6-month term:

  • T44, T58, T67, Tomášikova, indoor unit 3.60 m², ground floor, with a 20% discount: 91€, 86€ and 82€.
  • T73, Tomášikova, indoor unit 4.94 m² with a 1.30 × 3.80 m floor, with a 20% discount: 115€, 111€ and 107€.
  • D4, Dúbravka, container storage unit 7.20 m², ground floor: 108€, 103€ and 98€.
  • N29, N31, N62, Nitra, 7.20 m², ground floor, drive up to the door: 85€, 79€ and 74€.
  • P36, P38, P87, Pionierska, 14.40 m², ground floor, double doors: 169€, 157€ and 145€.
  • N2, N10, Nitra, 14.40 m², double doors, with a 20% discount: 132€, 122€ and 113€.

The first payment also includes a deposit of one month's rent, which comes back within 5 working days after the unit is properly returned. Insurance of your things up to 2,000€ is included.

Common mistakes

  1. A removal company booked a week ahead. At the end of the month there is often no free slot left.
  2. A quote without a visit. The hourly rate is half the bill; the other half is the number of hours.
  3. Moving things that will go anyway. Selling and giving away is cheaper before the move than after it.
  4. Boxes without labels. In the new flat you then open everything until you find the plates.
  5. A unit for a year "just in case". For the gap between flats a rental exactly to a date is enough; a longer term is recalculated if you end it early.
  6. Forbidden items in the unit. Paint, thinners and petrol do not belong in storage. The list is in our article on what you can and cannot store.

When you do not need storage for a move

  • You get the keys to the new flat before you hand back the old one. Things go straight from flat to flat.
  • Family or friends have a dry garage for a few days. For a week that is cheaper than a month of storage.
  • The removal company offers storage in the price. Compare it with a unit of your own that you can reach 24 hours a day.

How to go about it

  1. Write down the dates for handing back and taking over the flats and count the days between them.
  2. Get quotes from removal companies and confirm one.
  3. Sort your things and start packing what you do not need now.
  4. If there will be a gap, choose a unit on the location page by the size of the flat, the door and the access.
  5. Set the end of the rental exactly to the day you get the keys, or choose 1 month.
  6. Fill in your details and pay by card, bank transfer or QR payment. The contract starts with the first payment and you get access at once.
  7. In your account add the movers' phone numbers so they can open the site gate without you.

What TOP SKLAD offers

We run six sites in Bratislava and one in Nitra, 519 units in total; on 5 November 2026, 66 were free. The indoor units are at Holíčska in Petržalka and at Tomášikova in Nové Mesto, the container storage units at Dúbravka, Gessayova, Kaukazská, Pionierska and in Nitra. Access is 24 hours a day, so you can unload in the evening after handing back the flat. The sites are fenced with recording cameras and you lock the unit with your own padlock. We do not transport anything, but when renting you can tick "Moving assistance (paid service)" on the unit page: the partner's specialists contact you and you pay them directly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does moving in Bratislava cost?

It depends on the hours, the volume, stairs without a lift and the distance. Ask for two or three quotes after a visit or from a list of your things. We do not do removals; we rent storage units.

Where can I put my things between two flats?

In a storage unit rented exactly until the day you get the keys, for at least 31 days. For the contents of a two-bedroom flat 7 to 12 m² is enough.

Can the movers bring my things to the unit without me?

Yes. You add their phone number in your account and they open the site gate with a call. At Holíčska you enter the building with the personal code from your account. The unit is locked with your padlock, so they need the key from you.

What if the new flat is delayed?

You extend the rental in your account, by at least 30 days. The new period follows on from the last paid day and you do not pay the deposit again.

Do you move things too?

No, we do not do removals or transport. When renting a unit, though, you can request a paid transport partner.
