Before renting, nearly everyone asks the same things: can the gas bottle from the barbecue go in, a fuel can, the medicine cabinet, an online shop's stock, a motorbike? So what can you store in a storage unit, and what not? Our terms spell it out exactly, and nobody reads them. So off-site storage tends to surprise people only at the door, with a car full of things.

We rent storage units in Bratislava and Nitra and know the terms by heart. We go through them in this order: what is forbidden and why, the limits on weight and value, what belongs in a container and what in an indoor unit, what households and companies usually store, and what such a unit costs as of 20 October 2026.

What is forbidden in a storage unit

Point 3.3 of our terms lists the things that may not go into a unit, container or indoor alike. In practice that means:

• Flammables, explosives and fireworks: petrol in a can, a motor or mower with fuel in the tank, thinners, paraffin, New Year fireworks.
• Pressure vessels: the gas bottle from the barbecue or the cottage, camping stove cartridges, soda siphon chargers.
• Chemicals, corrosive and toxic substances: pesticides, drain cleaners, adhesives and paints with hazard symbols.
• Petroleum products: engine oil in cans, used oil, lubricants in quantity.
• Weapons, cartridges and ammunition.
• Medicines. Keep the medicine cabinet and any stock of medicines out of storage.
• Perishable food: the contents of the fridge, potatoes, fruit, pet food.
• Living things, plants and animals: houseplants, seedlings, an aquarium with fish.

The rule is simple: anything that can burn, explode, ferment or live goes home with you. Ordinary movable things are fine. A motorbike or an outboard motor is fine too, but only with an empty tank. We do not store cars or trailers.

Limits people forget: weight and value

• The floor takes 500 kg per m². A 3.60 m² container therefore carries about 1.8 tonnes spread over the whole floor. Do not put pallets of tiles, books or paper on one spot where they would exceed that.
• The value of the contents must not exceed the insurance cover. Insurance up to €2,000 is included. If the contents are worth more, choose cover up to €5,000 for €4.50, up to €7,000 for €7.50 or up to €10,000 for €12 a month when you rent. If you insure with another company, tell us in writing.
• The landlord may refuse goods of exceptional value or weight if the insurance is not properly shown.

What goes into a container and what into an indoor unit

Allowed does not mean suitable for every unit. Containers are ventilated but unheated and not air conditioned: it freezes inside in winter, and in autumn and spring moisture condenses on the cold steel. The indoor units at Tomášikova and Holíčska are inside buildings with a comfortable temperature in summer and winter.

• Into a container: tyres, garden furniture and tools, bicycles, building materials, boxes of things winter does not harm, furniture for a few weeks during a move.
• Into an indoor unit: electronics and appliances that hold water, clothes and shoes, books, photos and documents, mattresses and upholstered furniture, musical instruments, a motorbike.

What households store most

• Tyres and wheels at the seasonal change. How to stack them so they do not deform is in tyre storage in Bratislava.

What companies store most

• Online shop stock, palletised too: a 14.40 m² container with a double door takes 15 euro pallets.
• Archives and accounting records in an indoor unit, where paper stays dry.
• Tradespeople's tools and materials, in a ground floor container with the car at the door.
• Exhibition stands, banners and samples between trade fairs and events.

Which size and what it costs as of 20 October 2026

As a rough guide from our size guide: up to 3 m² seasonal things from a balcony or hallway, 3 to 5 m² a whole balcony or cellar plus dismantled furniture, a fridge or a washing machine, 5 to 7 m² the furniture of a one-room flat, 7 to 12 m² the contents of a two-room flat, and from 12 m² a three-room flat or dozens of pallets.

Prices are per month for a 1 / 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 month term, excluding VAT; 23% VAT is added where the location's landlord is VAT registered: always in Nitra, in Bratislava for companies with a VAT number. They change with how full a location is, and you always see the exact amount due before paying. At Tomášikova a 20% discount applies until 31 December 2026 to new rentals made on the site, for the term paid at the rental.

• A few boxes: H50A at Holíčska, 0.99 m², 1.20 m high: €37 / 35 / 33 / 30 / 28.
• Balcony things, skis and bikes kept warm: T13 or T14 at Tomášikova, 2.56 m²: €80 / 76 / 71 / 67 / 62 (regular €100 / 95 / 89 / 84 / 78).
• Tyres, garden things and boxes with the car at the door: a 3.60 m² container at Pionierska (P9, P13), ground floor: €75 / 69 / 64 / 56 / 48.
• A flat during a move: a 7.20 m² container at Dúbravka (D5, ground floor): €108 / 103 / 98 / 92 / 87. A 14.40 m² container at Pionierska (P36) with a double door: €169 / 157 / 145 / 139 / 133.

Common mistakes

• A mower or motorbike with petrol in the tank. Empty the tank and leave the can at home.
• A gas bottle "just for the winter". Pressure vessels are forbidden in every unit.
• Electronics, books and clothes in a container over winter. They belong in an indoor unit.
• Pallets of tiles or paper on one spot. The floor takes 500 kg per m², so spread the load.
• Expensive equipment on the basic insurance. If the contents are worth more than €2,000, choose higher cover when you rent.
• Food forgotten in the fridge or in kitchen boxes. Long-life supplies are better left out too, as they attract pests.

When to choose a different unit

• You are storing only boxes of clothes and documents: you do not need a container, the smallest indoor unit at Holíčska will do.
• The things are heavy and bulky, such as furniture that does not come apart: take a ground floor container with a double door, not an indoor unit with a 0.80 m door.
• Some things need warmth and some do not: a smaller indoor unit for the sensitive ones and a container for the rest costs less than one large indoor unit.

How to go about it

1. List what goes into storage and cross out everything on the forbidden list.
2. Split the rest into things that mind frost and things that do not.
3. Estimate the value of the contents and decide whether cover up to €2,000 is enough.
4. On the site choose a location and a unit. Each shows dimensions, door, floor, car access and the price for every term.
5. Fill in your details and pay. In about 10 minutes the contract and access details are in your customer account.
6. Bring your things and lock the unit with your own padlock. You have access 24/7.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep a gas bottle in a storage unit?

No. Point 3.3 of our terms forbids pressure vessels, flammables and explosives in containers and indoor units alike. A barbecue gas bottle, cartridges and a petrol can stay at home.

Can I store a motorbike or a lawn mower?

Yes, but without fuel in the tank. Motorbikes go only into the indoor units at Tomášikova and Holíčska, through a 0.80 m door. We do not store cars or trailers.

How much weight can the floor of a unit take?

500 kg per m². A 3.60 m² container therefore takes about 1.8 tonnes spread over the whole floor; do not put a heavy load on one spot.

Are my things insured in the unit?
