Container or indoor storage unit: how to choose | TOP SKLAD

On the TOP SKLAD site you choose between two kinds of unit: an orange container outdoors on a fenced site, or an indoor unit inside a building. Container or indoor storage unit is not a matter of taste. It depends on what you are storing, how big it is, what you bring it in and whether it can take a frost.

We rent both types in Bratislava and containers in Nitra too, so we have no reason to push you towards either. We compare them on five points: frost and damp, height, doors, car access and price per cubic metre. Then a list of what goes where, and prices as of 16 October 2026.

A container or an indoor unit?

Choose a location and see free units of both types with dimensions, doors and price.

The two types in short

  • Containers are converted shipping containers on fenced sites at Dúbravka (Polianky 15), Gessayova and Kaukazská in Petržalka, Pionierska in Nové Mesto and in Nitra (Bratislavská 15). They range from 3.60 to 28.80 m², most often 3.60, 7.20 and 14.40 m². As of 16 October 2026, 28 are free.
  • Indoor units are rooms inside closed buildings at Holíčska 7 in Petržalka and Tomášikova 50D in Nové Mesto. Free ones start at 0.99 m² today and the largest are about 7 m². 43 are free.

Both types have 24/7 access, cameras with recording and insurance up to €2,000 included. The exact dimensions, door and floor of each unit are on its page, and all sizes are on the page storage unit types and sizes.

1. Frost and damp

This is the biggest difference. Containers are ventilated but unheated and not air conditioned. In winter it freezes inside, in summer the steel heats up in the sun, and in autumn and spring moisture condenses on the cold walls. Indoor units are in buildings kept at a comfortable temperature in summer and winter, and both Holíčska and Tomášikova have temperature and humidity sensors in the building.

For things that do not mind the temperature a container is fine and costs less. For electronics, appliances that hold water, clothes, documents and anything leather or wooden you care about, the right choice is an indoor unit. Why a washing machine goes into a container in winter only when fully drained is explained in our article on how to store appliances, and how to keep clothes safe from moths in seasonal clothing storage.

2. Height: steel ceiling or no ceiling

  • A container is 2.60 m high with a solid steel ceiling. Anything longer has to lie down.
  • An indoor unit has 2.60 m walls but no ceiling of its own; the hall above is over 3 m high. A long item taller than the wall can stand in a corner.
  • The exception: the smallest boxes at Holíčska (from 0.99 m²) are closed and only 1.00 to 1.20 m high. Great for boxes, not for an upright vacuum cleaner or a clothes rail.

3. Doors

  • Indoor unit: 0.80 × 1.95 m; a few units at Holíčska only 0.70 m.
  • Container: usually 0.80 × 2.00 m; at Pionierska some containers have wider doors of 1.04 or 1.64 m.
  • A 2.25 × 2.30 m double door on the 14.40 m² containers, and in Nitra also on N29 and N41 (7.20 m²). Only these take a sofa that does not come apart, an American fridge or a euro pallet on a pallet truck.

For furniture and large items, then, the door often decides the type before the temperature does. What really fits into a 3.60, 7.20 and 14.40 m² container is set out in detail in storage container rental in Bratislava.

4. Car access

  • Ground floor containers (for example at Pionierska, in Nitra and some at Dúbravka): the car stops right at the unit door, and some sites take trucks up to 12 m long.
  • First floor containers (some at Dúbravka, Gessayova, Kaukazská and Pionierska): the car drives onto the site and you carry things up the stairs. Cheaper, but not for heavy items.
  • Tomášikova: the car drives onto the site, the indoor units are on the ground floor of the building, and there is a trolley.
  • Holíčska: the car stays in the outside car park, the units are on the building's terrace level, and the building door opens with the personal code from your account. There is a trolley here too, and tram 3's Pajštúnska stop is 230 m away.

At every site except Holíčska the gate opens with a call from your registered number, and you can add up to nine more numbers in your account.

5. Price per square and cubic metre as of 16 October 2026

Prices exclude VAT; VAT of 23% is added at payment. We give the monthly price on a 12-month rental and on a 1-month rental, and both change with how full a location is. At Tomášikova a 20% discount applies until 31 December 2026 to new rentals made on the site, in Nitra 20% on the 14.40 m² containers and 10% on most 7.20 m² ones; a renewal is at the regular price. Volume is counted up to 2.60 m.

  • 3.60 m² container (9.36 m³), D47 at Dúbravka or P13 at Pionierska: from €48 a month on 12 months, €74 to 75 on 1 month. That is €13.3 per m² and €5.1 per m³.
  • 7.20 m² container (18.72 m³), D40 at Dúbravka: €87 on 12 months, €108 on 1 month, €4.6 per m³. In Nitra N25 with the discount €58 and €77, €3.1 per m³.
  • 14.40 m² container (37.44 m³), P36 at Pionierska: €131 on 12 months, €167 on 1 month, €9.1 per m² and €3.5 per m³. In Nitra N2 with the discount €100 and €127, €2.7 per m³.
  • 3.60 m² indoor unit, T44 at Tomášikova: €74 on 12 months, €91 on 1 month (regular €93 and €114), €20.6 per m² and €7.9 per m³. At Holíčska H13, 3.20 m²: €63 and €83, €7.6 per m³.
  • The smallest indoor unit, H50A at Holíčska, 0.99 m² and 1.20 m high: €29 on 12 months, €37 on 1 month. Per metre it is the most expensive unit we offer (about €29 per m²), but the cheapest per month in total.

For the same 3.60 m², an indoor unit costs half as much again as a container with the discount and nearly twice as much without it. You are paying for the temperature and the dry air. Below 3 m², on the other hand, an indoor unit is the cheaper route, because we have no container smaller than 3.60 m². What fits into units from 1 m² is in small storage unit in Bratislava, and all of today's prices are on the page storage unit prices.

What goes where

  • Into a container: tyres and wheels, garden furniture and tools (a mower without fuel), building materials and tiles, bicycles, prams and sledges, furniture for a few weeks during a move, palletised goods that do not mind the temperature. How to store tyres so they do not deform is in tyre storage in Bratislava.
  • Into an indoor unit: electronics and appliances, clothes and shoes, documents and archives, books and photos, mattresses and upholstered furniture, antiques, a motorcycle (at Tomášikova or Holíčska, through the 0.80 m door).
  • Into neither: perishable food, animals and plants, fuel, gas bottles and other flammables, anything illegal. Our terms forbid these in both types of unit.

Common mistakes

  • A container for clothes or electronics over winter because it was cheaper. The saving ends with the first mouldy box.
  • An indoor unit for tyres and garden furniture. You pay for a temperature those things do not need.
  • A first floor container for heavy things. A washing machine or an oak wardrobe does not go up the stairs without effort you did not plan for.
  • Furniture without measuring. A 0.80 m door will not take a sofa that does not come apart; that needs a double door.
  • The smallest box at Holíčska for things on hangers. It is only 1.20 m high.

When a combination or a different approach pays off

  • Lots of both kinds of things: a smaller indoor unit for the sensitive ones and a container for the rest costs less than one large indoor unit.
  • Storing for the summer only: a container does not freeze then, but the steel heats up in the sun, so even in summer keep candles, vinyl records and glued items out of it.
  • You live in Petržalka and travel by tram: Holíčska is 230 m from the stop, the easiest indoor unit without a car.
  • You need storage for a month: the 1-month prices of both types are higher than the yearly ones, but if you know the exact end date choose "Custom period / Exact to the day" (at least 32 days).

How to go about it

  1. Split your things into those that mind frost and damp and those that do not.
  2. Measure the largest item: its width for a 0.80 m door and its length for a container's 2.60 m ceiling.
  3. Decide whether you need the car at the door or a trolley and a few steps will do.
  4. On the site choose a location and a unit. Each one shows the type, dimensions, door, floor, car access and the price for every term.
  5. Choose the term, fill in your details and pay. In about 10 minutes the contract and access details are in your customer account.
  6. Bring your things and lock the unit with your own padlock. You have access 24/7.
