In October the summer dresses, sandals and swimwear get pushed to the back of the wardrobe, and the coats, boots and ski suits come out of boxes on top of it. Seasonal clothing storage outside the flat makes sense once the wardrobe is full and neither the balcony nor the cellar would keep things free of damp and moths until next season.

We rent storage units in Bratislava and Nitra, and for clothes and shoes the conditions matter more than the size. We go through it in this order: what fabric and leather are afraid of, why they belong in an indoor unit, how to prepare clothes and shoes, how much fits into the smallest box, and actual units with prices as of 16 October 2026.

What clothes and shoes are afraid of

• Damp. Cotton, wool and leather all take up moisture from the air. With long-lasting damp come mould spots and a musty smell that hardly washes out.
• Clothes moths. Their larvae eat wool, cashmere, silk, fur and down, especially where sweat or food stains are left. They like the dark and being left alone, which is exactly the box nobody opens for six months.
• Temperature swings. When a cold surface meets warmer air, water condenses on it. Leather shoes and jackets get white marks and go stiff.
• Pressure and light. Down and wool squeezed for months in a vacuum bag lose the loft they need when you wear them. Sunlight fades the colours.

That is why an open balcony, a damp cellar or a hot attic are the wrong place even for a couple of months. Seasonal things need a dry place with a steady temperature. Why an indoor unit and not a container

Containers are ventilated but unheated and not air conditioned. In winter it freezes inside, in summer the steel heats up, and in autumn and spring moisture condenses on the cold walls and ceiling. That does not bother tyres, garden furniture or building materials. It does bother a wool coat and leather boots.

The indoor units at Holíčska and Tomášikova are inside closed buildings with a comfortable temperature in summer and winter, and both buildings have temperature and humidity sensors. Clothes and shoes there never go through a frost and no water condenses on them. How to prepare clothes

• Wash or dry clean everything before it goes away. Moths are drawn to sweat and food traces; a clean jumper does not interest them.
• Let everything dry completely, and take dry cleaning out of its plastic. A slightly damp item in a closed box goes mouldy.
• Put a lavender bag or a few pieces of cedar in with wool, cashmere and fur. They do not repel everything, but moths avoid such places.
• Fold jumpers, as they stretch on hangers. Keep coats and jackets on hangers in a breathable fabric cover, not in plastic.
• Use vacuum bags for synthetics, bed linen and blankets. Down jackets and duvets are better loose in a box so they keep their loft.
• Plastic boxes with lids beat cardboard in storage: no dust gets in and no moths either. Cardboard is fine for a short time and for things already in a bag.
• Label the boxes: "kids winter", "ski", "summer shoes". In April you open only the ones you need.

How to prepare shoes

• Wash the road salt off winter shoes and let them dry at room temperature, not on a radiator.
• Treat leather with cream or a proofing spray to suit the material; just brush suede.
• Put shoe trees or firmly packed paper inside. They hold the shape and draw out the last moisture.
• Stand tall boots with an insert in the shaft, otherwise they fold and keep a crease.
• Put each pair in its original box or a fabric bag, not a plastic bag where the leather sweats.

How much fits into the smallest box

The smallest units at Holíčska are closed boxes on the building's terrace level. H50A measures 0.93 × 1.06 m, is 1.20 m high and has a 0.80 × 1.00 m door. Standard 60 × 40 × 40 cm moving boxes go in three side by side and three high, about nine in all. That is the winter wardrobe of two adults or the summer clothes of a whole family. The lower boxes H39B and H39D (0.93 × 1.26 m, 1.01 m high) take about eight boxes in two layers.

If coats and suits are to hang, you need a unit with the full 2.60 m height where a clothes rail fits. T22 at Tomášikova (1.20 × 1.00 m) or H17 at Holíčska (1.46 × 1.25 m) is enough for that. What else fits into units from 1 m² is covered in detail in small storage unit in Bratislava.

Which unit and what it costs as of 16 October 2026

Prices are per month for a 1 / 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 month term, excluding VAT; 23% VAT is added where the location's landlord is VAT registered: always in Nitra, in Bratislava for companies with a VAT number. They change with how full a location is, and you always see the exact price before paying. A season usually lasts six months, so each unit also shows the six-month total.

• Nine boxes of clothes and shoes: H50A or H50C at Holíčska, 0.99 and 1.02 m², 1.20 m high: €37 / 35 / 33 / 31 / 29, six months €198.
• Eight boxes in two layers: H39B or H39D at Holíčska, 1.17 m², 1.01 m high: €39 / 37 / 35 / 33 / 31, six months €210.
• Coats and suits on a rail: T22 at Tomášikova, 1.20 m², full height: €45 / 42 / 40 / 38 / 36 (regular €56 / 53 / 50 / 47 / 45), six months €240. At Holíčska H17 or H22, 1.82 and 1.85 m²: €54 / 52 / 49 / 47 / 44, six months €294.
• A whole family's wardrobe, ski clothes and suitcases: T13 or T14 at Tomášikova, 2.56 m² (1.55 × 1.65 m): €80 / 76 / 71 / 67 / 62 (regular €100 / 95 / 89 / 84 / 78), six months €426.

At Tomášikova a 20% discount applies until 31 December 2026 to new rentals made on the site, for the term paid at the rental; a renewal is at the regular price. Holíčska has no discount. Every free unit with today's price is on the page storage unit prices.

Common mistakes

• Unwashed clothes put away "just for the winter". That is exactly where moths start.
• Dry cleaning left in its plastic. Moisture stays under the film.
• A down jacket for months in a vacuum bag. In spring it has no loft and is less warm.
• Leather boots in a plastic bag. The leather sweats and stains.
• Clothes in an unheated container over winter. Condensation from the walls and ceiling reaches the boxes too.
• Renting for a year when you know you will collect the things in six months. The six-month tariff costs less than a year paid in full in advance, and ending early is recalculated.

When to choose a different unit or term

• Bicycles and garden furniture go along with the clothes: put the clothes in a small indoor unit and the big things that do not mind frost in a container, or everything into a larger indoor unit at Tomášikova.
• You want to drive right up to the unit: at Holíčska the car stays in the outside car park and a personal code opens the building; at Tomášikova the car drives onto the site and the units are on the ground floor.
• You are going abroad for a semester or a work stay and the clothes are in suitcases: see long-term luggage storage in Bratislava.
• You know exactly when you will collect them: choose "Custom period / Exact to the day" instead of whole months.

How to go about it

1. Sort things out: what stays at home, what goes to storage and what nobody will wear again.
2. Wash or clean everything, let it dry and treat the shoes.
3. Pack into lidded boxes or cartons, add lavender or cedar and label the boxes.
4. Count the boxes: up to nine fit the smallest box at Holíčska; with hangers you need a full-height unit.
5. On the site choose a location and a unit, pick six months or an exact date and pay. In about 10 minutes the contract and access details are in your customer account.
6. Bring the things and lock the unit with your own padlock. In spring extend the rental in your account and swap winter for summer.

Where can I store winter clothes when the wardrobe is full?

Somewhere dry with a steady temperature, safe from moths and damp. An indoor unit at Holíčska measuring 0.93 × 1.06 m and 1.20 m high takes about nine moving boxes.

Can clothes be stored in a container over winter?

We do not recommend it. Containers are unheated, it freezes inside in winter and moisture condenses on the walls. Clothes and shoes belong in an indoor unit with a comfortable temperature at Holíčska or Tomášikova.

How do I protect stored clothes from moths?

Store only clean things, in lidded boxes, with lavender or cedar. Wrap wool, cashmere and fur separately in a fabric bag.

How much does it cost to store clothes for the winter?

As of 16 October 2026 from €198 excluding VAT for six months in box H50A at Holíčska (€29 a month on a yearly rental). Prices change with occupancy.

Are my things insured in the unit?

Yes, insurance up to €2,000 is included. If a wardrobe with furs is worth more, you can choose cover up to €5,000 for €4.50 a month, up to €7,000 for €7.50 or up to €10,000 for €12 when you rent.
