How to Properly Store Skis and Ski Equipment | TOP SKLAD

Why proper ski equipment storage matters

The end of the ski season does not mean the end of caring for your equipment. Skis, snowboards, boots and other accessories require proper conditions even during the months you are not using them. Improper storage — for example, in a damp basement, in direct sunlight, or in an overheated garage — leads to material deformation, edge corrosion and gradual degradation of equipment you have invested significant money in.

If you own equipment for the whole family, the storage problem multiplies. Two or three pairs of skis, a snowboard, boots, poles, helmets and guards take up considerable space in a flat. The solution is a dedicated storage unit where everything stays safe while you free up space at home.

How to prepare skis for summer storage

Proper preparation before storage is the foundation of your equipment's longevity. A missed step can result in an unpleasant surprise at the start of the new season.

  • Thoroughly clean your skis of dirt, residual snow and salt. Let them dry completely at room temperature — never near a direct heat source.
  • Inspect the base and treat it with a layer of paraffin wax to protect the surface from oxidation and drying out.
  • Apply a thin layer of protective oil or a specialised anti-corrosion product to the metal edges.
  • Release the bindings to the lowest DIN setting so that the springs are not under unnecessary tension during long-term storage.
  • Place the skis in a travel bag or wrap them in soft fabric. Never use airtight plastic film — moisture will accumulate underneath.

Preparing your snowboard and accessories

A snowboard requires similar care to skis. After cleaning and drying, apply a layer of wax to the base and leave the bindings in a loosened position. Wash ski boots, dry them inside and insert paper stuffing or dedicated boot shapers to help them maintain their form.

Store helmets, goggles and guards in their original packaging or soft pouches. Avoid compressing them under heavy objects — deformation of protective materials reduces their safety performance.

Ideal storage conditions

Regardless of what material your skis are made from, several fundamental rules apply to creating the right storage conditions:

  • Stable air humidity in the range of 40–60 %. Air that is too dry causes wooden cores to crack, while high humidity promotes corrosion and mould.
  • Temperature without extreme fluctuations. A cool environment shielded from direct sunlight and away from heating sources is ideal.
  • Sufficient air circulation to prevent condensation forming on the surface of your equipment.
  • Store skis vertically. If you place them side by side, the bases should not touch — insert a soft cloth or use a dedicated separator between them.

What to do when there is no room at home

A city flat simply is not designed for storing bulky sports equipment. A balcony exposes your gear to the weather, a basement is usually too damp, and a garage overheats in the summer. For families with two or three sets of skis, the problem becomes even more pressing.

Renting a storage unit at TOP SKLAD is a practical solution that frees up space at home while ensuring your equipment reaches the next season in perfect condition. Our storage locations can be found in Bratislava and Nitra — always close to where you live.

Why choose TOP SKLAD

  • A range of unit sizes — from small indoor lockers (from 0.8 m²) to large containers (up to 15 m² and above). For a family's ski equipment, a compact unit from 3.5 m² is usually sufficient.
  • Round-the-clock access 24/7 — reach your belongings at any time, with no restrictions. Planning a ski trip for the weekend? Simply pick up your gear from the unit.
  • Security — all locations are situated on private, guarded premises with CCTV surveillance. Only you have access to your unit, using your own padlock.
  • Online management — the entire rental process, from selection to payment, takes about 10 minutes and is handled entirely online. No office visit required.
  • Affordable pricing — container unit rental starts from just €25 per month. The longer the rental period you choose, the lower the monthly rate.
  • Complimentary insurance — your stored belongings are automatically insured up to €2,000. Enhanced coverage up to €10,000 is available as an option.

Tip for families

If you are storing equipment for the whole family, consider a larger container that can comfortably fit not only skis and snowboards, but also sledges, children's snow tubes, ski boots and other seasonal gear. With container heights of up to 3 metres, you can make efficient use of space by storing items vertically.
