The old flat goes back to the landlord empty on the last day of the lease, or to the buyer on the date in the contract, and the keys to the new one come only a few weeks later. Until then the sofa, the wardrobes, the washing machine and a pile of moving boxes have nowhere to go, and one move turns into two. The weeks between moving out and moving in are what temporary storage when moving is for: your things wait in a locked unit until you have the keys.

We rent storage units in Bratislava and Nitra for exactly that gap, whether you are moving flats in Bratislava or moving to or from Slovakia: from 1 month, or up to a day you choose. We do not move or pack anything ourselves. You rent a unit, bring your things and lock it with your own padlock.

What follows: how long the gap between two flats usually lasts, how to rent a unit exactly to the day and what to do when the new flat is late, who can move your things, what goes into storage and what stays with you, which unit suits which flat with prices on 8 October 2026, then moving day and handing the unit back.

How long the gap between two flats lasts

How long your things will wait decides the rental term, and with it the price of the unit. Often nobody knows the exact number of days in advance, but the gap usually looks like this:

• From one rented flat to another. The old lease ends on a fixed date, you hand the flat back empty when you sign the handover protocol (odovzdávací protokol) with the landlord, and the new flat is free from a date of its own. In between there are a few days to several weeks.
• Selling one flat and buying another. In Slovakia the buyer becomes the owner only when the cadastre (kataster), the land registry, enters the transfer. That entry follows a "návrh na vklad", the application to register it, and by law the cadastre decides on it within 30 days, or within 15 days on the paid expedited track; the clock stops while any document is missing. Sellers and buyers time the handover around this, so a gap of several weeks to two months is common. • A new build (novostavba). The handover date often slips while the building waits for its kolaudácia, the official approval for use, or while defects are fixed, so nobody knows in advance when the gap will end.
• Renovating the new flat before you move in. That means weeks to months, and the furniture has to wait until the tradespeople have gone. How to prepare it for that time, and what copes with winter, is in our guide on where to store furniture during renovation.
• Moving to Slovakia or leaving it. Suitcases and boxes then wait a month or longer for the next home. If it is mostly luggage, see long-term luggage storage in Bratislava.

For the rental, all of this comes down to one thing: either you know the day your things leave the unit, or you do not.

Temporary storage to the exact day you get the keys

We rent for 1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months and never for less than a month. The longer the term, the lower the monthly rate; today's rates for every free unit are in our storage rental price list.

For a gap between two flats, though, the option "Custom period / Exact to the day" usually fits better: the rental ends on the day you choose. The end has to be at least 31 days after the start, so a rental to an exact day lasts 32 days or more.

The site prices it like this. It counts the days, the first and the last included, rounds them up to whole months of 30.4 days and takes the monthly rate of the longest term that this number of months reaches (1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months). That rate divided by 30.4 is the price of one day, and the price of one day times the number of days is the total, which you see before you pay.

An example on 8 October 2026: container P13 at Pionierska has 3.60 m² and costs 75€ for one month. Six weeks in it, 42 days, work out at 2.47€ a day, 103.74€ in total, where two separate months would be 150€. At 61 days the three-month rate already applies: 2.30€ a day, 140.30€ in total. The same 42 days come to 152.04€ in container D40 with 7.20 m² and 228.06€ in container P32 with 14.40 m². Prices move with occupancy. All prices in this article exclude VAT, as on the site; 23% VAT is added where the location's landlord is VAT registered: always in Nitra, in Bratislava for companies with a VAT number.

The first payment also includes a deposit, kaucia in Slovak, of one month's rent at the rate of your term. It is returned once you hand the unit back properly.

Which term to choose depends on what you know about the new flat:

• You know the day you get the keys. Rent exactly to that day, or allow a little extra for the day you move everything out of the unit.
• You do not know it, as with a new build or a flat you are buying while the cadastre decides. Take 1 or 3 months and extend in your account when needed.
• Do not take a year "just in case". Contracts are for a fixed term, and ending one early is recalculated at the tariff of the term you actually used, with the last 14 days not refunded. The FAQ on our site gives the example of a 6-month rental ended after 3.5 months and recalculated at the 3-month tariff.

When the keys to the new flat are late

The new build is not handed over on time, the cadastre asks for another document, or the tradespeople miss their deadline. You can extend the rental in your account at any time: choose a term and pay. The new period starts the day after the last paid day, and there is no second deposit.

An extension with an end date of your own has to cover at least 30 days; if the new date is closer than that, extend by a month. Extensions are at the regular price, because the discount at Tomášikova and in Nitra holds only for the term paid when you rent. Your account shows the price of the extension before you pay, and as prices move with occupancy, it can differ from the original price.

Who moves your things: a partner on request

To be plain about it: TOP SKLAD moves nothing. We have no van and no movers, and we do not pack. When you rent, though, the unit page has a block called "Moving assistance (paid service)". Choose "Yes, I need it" and the site tells you "Our specialists will contact you as soon as possible regarding moving assistance". The request reaches us, and the specialists who then get in touch are our partner's: you agree the move with them and pay the partner directly.

That is why this article gives no price for the move; the partner quotes it. If you have your own movers, you can leave the block alone and simply add their phone numbers in your account so they can open the gate, as described under moving day below.

What goes into storage and what stays with you

Deciding where to store belongings between moves is easier if you sort them while you pack. Mark each moving box with its room and with where it is going: the unit, or straight to the new flat.

The unit takes whatever the new flat has no room for yet, or whatever you can do without for a few weeks:

• furniture and boxes that do not fit into the new flat yet,
• books, decorations, off-season clothes and shoes,
• things from a room in the new flat that is still being renovated,
• bikes, skis and everything from the cellar and the balcony.

With you, or with friends, stays whatever you need every day or would rather not let out of your sight:

• passports, residence cards, the contracts for both flats and valuables,
• medicines,
• the laptop, phones and chargers,
• bedding, towels and clothes for the next few weeks,
• a "first days" box with toiletries, a few plates and mugs, and the tools to put the bed back together.

Nothing alive, perishable, flammable or illegal may go into a unit. In a move that means food from the fridge and the freezer, houseplants, leftover paint, thinners and gas cylinders, including the one for the barbecue, go with you and not into storage.

It also matters which unit a thing goes into. Containers are ventilated but unheated and not air-conditioned, so the temperature inside follows the weather: drain all the water from a washing machine or a dishwasher before the frosts. Electronics, folders of papers and photos belong in an indoor unit, which stays at a comfortable temperature in summer and in winter.

Which unit for which flat: prices on 8 October 2026

Choosing a storage unit while moving house starts with the size guide on our site. Like Slovak flat listings, it counts rooms rather than bedrooms, and the living room is one of them, so a two-room flat has one bedroom and a three-room flat has two. In those terms, the guide says:

• 3 to 5 m²: a whole balcony or cellar, plus dismantled furniture, a fridge or a washing machine.
• 5 to 7 m²: the furniture of a one-room flat, or about 100 moving boxes.
• 7 to 12 m²: the contents of a two-room flat, large appliances, beds and wardrobes included.
• 12 m² and more: a three-room flat.

In a move through storage, though, the unit rarely takes the whole flat, only what the new one cannot hold yet. So count what will really go out, not the rooms.

For furniture storage while moving, the door comes first. Indoor units have doors of 0.80 × 1.95 m and ordinary containers 0.80 × 2.00 m. A double door of 2.25 × 2.30 m is found only on the 14.40 m² containers and, in Nitra, on N41 with 7.20 m². Measure any sofa or wardrobe that does not come apart before you rent.

The second question is where the van stops. At the ground-floor containers at Pionierska in Nové Mesto you reverse right up to the door. On 8 October 2026 every free 7.20 m² container in Bratislava is on the first floor up a flight of stairs, and so are K23 and K30 with 14.40 m² at Kaukazská: you can drive onto the site, but the wardrobe and the washing machine go up the stairs by hand. Monthly prices for a 1 / 3 / 6 / 9 / 12-month term on 8 October 2026; prices move with occupancy, and you see the exact sum before you pay:

• A three-room flat, or a sofa and a wardrobe in one piece: containers of 14.40 m² (6.00 × 2.40 m, 37.44 m³) with a double door. P32, P36, P38 and P87 are among the drive-up containers at Pionierska, on the ground floor, at 165 / 153 / 141 / 136 / 130€, which makes 459€ for three months. K23 and K30 at Kaukazská in Petržalka are on the first floor up the stairs, at 170 / 158 / 146 / 140 / 134€.
• A two-room flat whose big pieces come apart: containers of 7.20 m² (3.00 × 2.40 m, 18.72 m³, door 0.80 × 2.00 m), all on the first floor up the stairs. D40 in Dúbravka costs 110 / 104 / 99 / 93 / 88€, 312€ for three months, G47 at Gessayova 109 / 104 / 99 / 93 / 88€ and K27D at Kaukazská 109 / 104 / 98 / 93 / 87€.
• Part of the furniture, appliances and boxes: containers of 3.60 m² (2.40 × 1.50 m, 9.36 m³, door 0.80 × 2.00 m). P13 and P14 at Pionierska are on the ground floor with the car at the door, at 75 / 70 / 65 / 56 / 49€, 210€ for three months. D47, D50, D51, D53, D55 and D56 in Dúbravka are on the first floor up the stairs, at 73 / 67 / 62 / 54 / 47€.
• Boxes, clothes, bedding, books, electronics and photos: indoor units with a steady temperature, 2.60 m walls and doors of 0.80 × 1.95 m. At Tomášikova 50D in Nové Mesto you drive onto the site and the units are on the ground floor. Until 31 December 2026 these units carry a 20% discount on new rentals made on the site: T13 and T14 with 2.56 m² at 80 / 76 / 71 / 67 / 62€ (regular 100 / 95 / 89 / 84 / 78€), 228€ for three months; T44, T58 and T67 with 3.60 m² at 91 / 87 / 83 / 79 / 75€ (regular 114 / 109 / 104 / 99 / 94€), 261€ for three months; and T51 with 6.60 m², which takes the furniture of a one-room flat if it goes through the door, at 128 / 124 / 120 / 115 / 111€ (regular 160 / 155 / 150 / 144 / 139€).
• Indoor units without a discount at Holíčska 7 in Petržalka, where the car stays in the outside car park and the units are on the terrace level: H13 with 3.20 m² at 83 / 78 / 73 / 68 / 63€, H6 with 3.48 m² and H38 with 3.50 m² at 94 / 88 / 83 / 78 / 73€, and H47 with 3.95 m² at 104 / 99 / 94 / 88 / 83€.

In Nitra, at Bratislavská 15, the free containers are on the ground floor and discounted until 31 December 2026. The 7.20 m² containers N25, N44, N45, N51, N52 and N55 are 10% off at 76 / 72 / 68 / 62 / 58€ (regular 85 / 80 / 75 / 69 / 64€), and N41, with a double door and the car at the door, costs the same. The 14.40 m² containers N2, N5, N9 and N10, also with the car at the door, are 20% off at 123 / 114 / 106 / 101 / 97€ (regular 154 / 143 / 132 / 126 / 121€).

Moving day: the gate, the movers and what goes in first

The sites are open 24/7, every day of the year, so you can bring things in the evening after handing back the old flat, or at the weekend. The gate opens when you call it from the phone number registered in your account, at every site except Holíčska.

Add the phone numbers of the movers, and of anyone else helping, in your account in advance: up to nine extra numbers per location. They can then open the gate themselves, even when they come without you. Holíčska has no gate that opens on a call: the building door opens only with the personal code from your account, so be there yourself when the movers arrive.

You lock the unit with your own padlock. If you do not have one, a new padlock in a sealed pack waits for you as a gift on the inside of the unit door. Only you hold the key, so leave it with movers who come without you.

To find your way around the unit a few weeks later, put the furniture at the back, stand dismantled wardrobe and bed panels upright against the wall, and keep heavy boxes at the bottom with lighter ones on top. Near the door goes what you will want first: the boxes you will unpack in the new flat straight away, and clothes for the next season in case the gap stretches.

Handing the unit back and the deposit

Once your things are in the new flat, hand the unit back by 17:00 on the last paid day: empty it, take off your padlock, upload 3 photos in your account (2 inside, 1 outside) and send the return form. The deposit goes back to the same card or account within 5 working days, at most 10 depending on your bank.

If you neither extend the rental nor hand the unit back, we clear it within 3 days after the paid period ends. We charge no fines on top, but the deposit is not returned. So set the end of a rental to an exact day with enough time to empty the unit.

Common mistakes

• Two full months when you know the key date. In P13, 42 days to the exact day come to 103.74€, two separate months to 150€ (on 8 October 2026; prices move with occupancy).
• A year "just in case". If you get the new flat sooner, the rental is recalculated at the tariff of the term you used, and the last 14 days are not refunded.
• A sofa that will not go through the door. Apart from the 14.40 m² containers and N41, every unit has a door 0.80 m wide. Measure whatever does not come apart before you rent.
• Heavy furniture on the first floor. On 8 October 2026 every free 7.20 m² container in Bratislava is on the first floor up the stairs. For wardrobes and appliances you do not want to carry up a staircase, choose the ground floor at Pionierska.
• Water in the washing machine and photos in a container over winter. Containers are not heated: drain the washing machine and the dishwasher, and put electronics, papers and photos in an indoor unit.
• Movers stuck outside a locked gate. Add their numbers in your account in advance, and at Holíčska come along yourself, because the building door there opens only with your code.

Choosing the right unit and term

When you work out where to temporarily store your belongings, it is easy to overpay if the size, the term or the site is wrong. What to choose in the usual situations:

• The gap is only a few days. You still pay for a whole month, since we do not rent for less. So put into storage only what the new flat cannot take yet, and rent a unit for those things rather than for the whole flat: container P13 or P14 at Pionierska at 75€ a month for a few pieces of furniture and boxes, or indoor unit T13 or T14 at Tomášikova at 80€ for boxes of electronics or papers (on 8 October 2026; prices move with occupancy).
• You are moving a whole flat. Rent one 14.40 m² container with a double door and the car at the door, P32, P36, P38 or P87 at Pionierska, rather than several indoor units. It costs 165€ for a month, while T51 with 6.60 m² and T44 with 3.60 m² at Tomášikova cost 128€ and 91€ even with the discount: more together, for less floor space. The sofa and the wardrobe also go through the door in one piece.
• You are storing only boxes and personal things. You do not need a big container; an indoor unit with a steady temperature will do, such as T44, T58 or T67 with 3.60 m² at Tomášikova, 91€ a month or 261€ for three months with the discount.
• The movers will come without you. Do not choose Holíčska, where the building door opens only with your personal code. At the other sites, add their numbers in your account and leave them the padlock key.

How to go about it

1. Pin down the dates: when you hand back the old flat, and whether you already know the day you get the keys to the new one.
2. List what goes into storage and measure the largest pieces. Compare them with the 0.80 m door and the floor plan of the unit.
3. On our site, choose a location and a free unit. Each unit shows its dimensions, volume, door and the price for every term.
4. Choose the term: "Custom period / Exact to the day" if you know the day, with the end at least 31 days after the start; otherwise 1 or 3 months. If you want help with the move, choose "Yes, I need it" in the "Moving assistance (paid service)" block.
5. Fill in your details: real name, address, e-mail and a European phone number starting with +3 or +4, such as +421. We do not rent anonymously, and a number from outside Europe cannot be registered, but a Slovak SIM bought on arrival works.
6. Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The contract starts with the first payment, the documents and access details are in your account at once, and the whole thing takes about 10 minutes. The site, the checkout and your account all work in English.
7. Add the numbers of the movers and helpers in your account, up to nine per location, bring your things and lock the unit with your own padlock.
8. If the keys are late, extend the rental in your account. Once you have them, empty the unit by 17:00 on the last paid day, upload 3 photos and send the return form.

How much do movers and storage between moving out and moving in cost?

The price of the move is set by our partner or by the moving company you hire; we do not move anything. For storage, 42 days cost 103.74€ in container P13 with 3.60 m², 152.04€ in container D40 with 7.20 m² or 228.06€ in container P32 with 14.40 m², all excluding VAT, on 8 October 2026. On top of that comes a deposit of one month's rent, returned once you hand the unit back. Prices move with occupancy.

Can I rent a storage unit for just two weeks?

No. The shortest rental is one month, and a rental to an exact day lasts at least 32 days. Two weeks are therefore charged as a month: container P13 at Pionierska is 75€ excluding VAT on 8 October 2026, plus a refundable deposit of one month's rent. Prices move with occupancy.

What size storage unit do I need for a one-bedroom flat?

In Slovak terms that is a two-room flat, and our size guide puts its contents at 7 to 12 m². On 8 October 2026 the free 7.20 m² containers in Bratislava are on the first floor up the stairs, for example D40 in Dúbravka at 110€ a month excluding VAT. If the sofa or a wardrobe stays in one piece, take a 14.40 m² container with a double door at Pionierska, 165€ a month, where you reverse the car right up to the door. Prices move with occupancy.

What if my new flat isn't ready on time?

Extend the rental in your account: the new period starts the day after the last paid day, and there is no second deposit. An extension to an exact day must cover at least 30 days; if the new date is sooner, extend by a month. Extensions are at the regular price, so a discount from your first rental does not carry over.

Can movers bring my things to the unit without me?

Yes, everywhere except Holíčska. Add up to 9 extra phone numbers per location in your account, and the movers open the gate by calling it. The unit itself is locked with your padlock, so leave them the key. At Holíčska only your personal code opens the building door.
