A flat renovation in Bratislava starts with emptying the rooms: the sofa, the wardrobes, the bed, the washing machine and the fridge all have to go somewhere. Pushing furniture into the middle of the room works for a coat of paint, not for new floors, rewiring or a bathroom refit, when dust and tradespeople get everywhere. So where to store furniture during renovation comes down to four questions: how much room the furniture really takes, what an unheated container can take, how long you need the unit and in what order to empty the flat.

We go through them in that order, with the sizes and prices of units that are free on 26 September 2026.

How much room one room and a whole flat take

Our services page has a size guide, and for furniture it holds up well. The floor area, the floor plan and the price of every free unit are in the storage unit price list.

• 3 to 5 m²: the dismantled furniture of one room, a fridge or a washing machine and a few boxes. For example a 3.60 m² container with a 2.40 × 1.50 m floor, or a 3.60 m² indoor unit at Tomášikova with a 2.00 × 1.80 m floor.
• 5 to 7 m²: the furniture of a one-bedroom flat. Indoor unit T51 at Tomášikova has 6.60 m² on a 2.20 × 3.00 m floor.
• 7 to 12 m²: the contents of a two-bedroom flat, large appliances, beds and wardrobes included. A 7.20 m² container has a 3.00 × 2.40 m floor.
• 12 m² and more: a three-bedroom flat. A 14.40 m² container has a 6.00 × 2.40 m floor and 37.44 m³ of space.

Floor area is only half of it. Units are 2.60 m high, so dismantled wardrobe panels, bed boards and boxes go up, and the floor stays free for the sofa and the appliances. In a container the 2.60 m is a solid steel ceiling. The indoor units at Holíčska and Tomášikova have no ceiling of their own: 2.60 m is the height of the partitions, the hall above them is over 3 m high, and a tall piece may stick out above the partition. Container or indoor unit: what survives the winter

A renovation that starts in September or October often runs into winter. The containers at Dúbravka, Gessayova, Kaukazská, Pionierska and in Nitra are ventilated but neither heated nor air-conditioned, so inside it is about as cold as outside. The indoor units are in a building that stays at a comfortable temperature in summer and winter. Sort the furniture before you choose:

• Fine in a container: chipboard and laminate wardrobes, metal beds and shelving, kitchen cabinets, chairs, boxes of clothes, books and dishes, children's furniture.
• Better in an indoor unit: solid wood furniture and antiques, which do not like sharp swings of temperature and humidity, framed pictures and electronics.
• Appliances: a washing machine or dishwasher must not have water left in it. In an unheated container it freezes in the hoses and the pump over winter. If you cannot drain it completely, put it in an indoor unit. Store the fridge clean, dry and with the door ajar, or it grows mould.

Doors, stairs and parking at the unit

With furniture the door decides a lot. Indoor units have 0.80 × 1.95 m doors, standard containers 0.80 × 2.00 m. A sofa that does not pass 0.80 m even on its side needs double doors of 2.25 × 2.30 m. Today those are on the free 14.40 m² containers P32, P36 and P38 at Pionierska and K7 at Kaukazská, all on the ground floor with the car right at the door, and in Nitra on N41 (7.20 m²) and N2, N5, N9 and N10 (14.40 m²).

We will also say plainly what you do not see at first glance: every free 7.20 m² container in Bratislava on 26 September 2026 is on the first floor up a flight of stairs, at Dúbravka, Gessayova and Kaukazská, with a 0.80 m door. You can drive onto the site, but the wardrobe and the washing machine go up the steps by hand. For one room with the car at the door, take a 3.60 m² container at Pionierska; for a whole flat, 14.40 m² at Pionierska or K7 at Kaukazská. At Tomášikova you drive onto the site and the indoor units are on the ground floor; at Holíčska the car stays in the car park outside.

How long: renovations tend to run over

We rent for 1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, and also exactly to a date you choose. The longer the term, the lower the monthly price. Container P9 at Pionierska on 26 September 2026:

• 1 month: 75€
• 3 months: 69€ a month, 207€ in total
• 6 months: 64€ a month, 384€ in total

If you do not know when the work will be done, take a shorter term and extend it in your account whenever you need to. The new period starts the day after the last paid day. On a monthly rental you can switch on automatic card renewal when you order, and the rental then renews at the price of your order until you cancel it. Room by room: in what order to empty the flat

You only empty the whole flat at once for a full renovation. When the work goes in stages, a smaller unit is enough and its contents rotate:

1. First what you will not need until the end: seasonal clothes, books, decorations, children's things. Pack them in boxes labelled with the room.
2. Then the room where the work starts. Take the wardrobes and beds apart, put the screws in a bag and tape it to the part they belong to.
3. Bathroom: for a bathroom refit, take out the washing machine and everything from the bathroom; the rest of the flat can often stay.
4. Kitchen: dishes and food stay at home, perishable food is not allowed in the unit. The appliances and cabinets go into storage.
5. Back room by room. When a room is finished, its furniture comes back and the space in the unit takes the next room.

Access is 24 hours a day, so you can clear a room on a Saturday evening after the tradespeople leave. You can add the phone numbers of your movers or builders in your account, and they open the gate themselves; Holíčska has no gate that opens on a call, and its building door opens only with your personal code. Prices change daily with how full a site is, and you always see the exact price before you confirm the order. Monthly price on a 1, 3 and 6-month term:

• H47, Holíčska, indoor 3.95 m², 2.55 × 1.55 m: 104€, 99€ and 94€.
• T44, T58, T67, Tomášikova, indoor 3.60 m², 2.00 × 1.80 m: 114€, 108€ and 103€.
• T51, Tomášikova, indoor 6.60 m², 2.20 × 3.00 m: 160€, 155€ and 150€.
• P9, P13, P14, Pionierska, 3.60 m² container on the ground floor: 75€, 69€ and 64€.
• D47 to D56, Dúbravka, 3.60 m² container on the first floor: 74€, 69€ and 64€.
• K27A, K27D, Kaukazská, 7.20 m² container on the first floor: 108€, 103€ and 97€.
• N41, Nitra, 7.20 m² on the ground floor with double doors: 85€, 80€ and 75€.
• P32, P36, P38, Pionierska, 14.40 m² on the ground floor with double doors: 167€, 155€ and 143€.

With the first payment you pay a deposit of one month's rent, returned within 5 working days after the unit is properly handed back. Insurance up to 2,000€ is included. For expensive furniture you can raise the cover to 5,000€ for 4.50€ a month, to 7,000€ for 7.50€ or to 10,000€ for 12€.

Common mistakes

1. Leftover paint, thinner and glue in the unit. The terms forbid flammables and chemicals. Tins from the painting stay at home or with the builders.
2. Water in the washing machine. In a container it freezes over winter and ruins the hoses and the pump. Drain it or choose an indoor unit.
3. A sofa wrapped in plastic. Moisture condenses under the film. Cover upholstery with a breathable sheet.
4. A first-floor container for heavy furniture. The first floor means stairs. Take wardrobes and appliances to a ground-floor unit with the car at the door.
5. Wardrobes left in one piece. An assembled wardrobe takes floor space that its panels would leave free. Take it apart and stand the panels against the wall.
6. A forgotten extension. If the work runs over and you do not extend, we clear the unit within 3 days of the end of the paid period and the deposit is not returned. An extension is paid in your account.

When a smaller or different unit is enough

• You are only redoing the bathroom. You do not need room for the whole flat: the washing machine and the bathroom contents fit in 3 to 5 m².
• The furniture is solid wood or antique. Take an indoor unit at Tomášikova instead of a container; T51 with 6.60 m² takes larger pieces too.
• You renovate one room at a time. A unit for one room is enough, with the contents rotating.
• You know the finish date. Do not take a year: rent exactly to the date or for 3 months.
• The renovation ends early. Contracts are for a fixed term, but unused months are recalculated at the tariff of the term you actually used, minus the last 14 days.
• You renovate to sell. For the photos and viewings you do not need to empty the flat, only the personal things and the surplus furniture, as our article on home staging and storage while you sell explains.

How to go about it

1. List the furniture and appliances that have to leave the flat and split them into what can winter in a container and what needs warmth.
2. Measure the largest pieces: the sofa, the fridge, the wardrobe once dismantled. Compare them with the 0.80 m door and the floor plans of free units on the site page.
3. For heavy furniture, pick a ground-floor unit with the car at the door.
4. Choose the term: 3 months, exactly to the finish date, or monthly with automatic renewal.
5. Fill in your details and pay by card, bank transfer or QR payment. The contract starts with the first payment and you get your access details at once; the whole thing takes about 10 minutes.
6. In your account, add the numbers of the movers or builders who will bring things in.
7. Heavy items go at the bottom and at the back, panels upright against the wall, boxes on top. Lock the unit with your own padlock; we give you a sealed one free.
8. When the work is done, clear everything by 17:00 on the last paid day, upload 3 photos in your account and send the hand-back form.

How much does furniture storage during a renovation cost in Bratislava?

On 26 September 2026 a 3.60 m² container at Pionierska costs 69€ a month on a 3-month term, 207€ in total. A 14.40 m² container for a whole flat at the same site is 155€ a month, 465€ in total. Prices change with occupancy.

What size unit do I need for a two-bedroom flat?

Our size guide says 7 to 12 m², so a 7.20 m² container with a 3.00 × 2.40 m floor. With a lot of appliances, or if you would rather not take the wardrobes apart, 14.40 m² is the safer choice.

Can I keep a fridge and a washing machine in storage over winter?

Yes, if they are clean and dry. Drain all the water from a washing machine or dishwasher, as it would freeze in an unheated container. If in doubt, put them in an indoor unit at Holíčska or Tomášikova.

What if the renovation takes longer than planned?

You extend the rental in your account at any time, and the new period starts the day after the last paid day. A monthly rental with automatic card renewal renews by itself at the price of your order.

Can movers bring the furniture in without me?

Yes, except at Holíčska. You can add up to nine extra phone numbers per site in your account, and the movers open the gate by calling from their number; at Holíčska the building door opens only with your personal code. The unit is locked with your own padlock, so you have to give them the key.
