Shipping container for storage: buy or rent?

Shipping container for storage: buy or rent?

A shipping container for storage makes sense for someone who wants their things on their own land and for years. Someone who wants one only because there is no room at home often finds that the price of the container is just the start: delivery, a crane, a level base, the municipality, a lock and damp all add cost and work. I will say it plainly at the start: we neither sell nor rent out containers. We rent storage units built inside shipping containers, on fenced sites in Bratislava and Nitra.

Below we compare both routes in order: what a container costs, what else it needs, what the building act says and what a unit of the same size costs on 1 November 2026.

What a shipping container costs

The usual purchase is a 20-foot container: 6.06 × 2.44 m outside, 2.59 m high, about 2.2 tonnes empty. The price depends on condition. "As is" units with rust and dents sell on European marketplaces from about 1,300€ without delivery. A cargo-worthy container (IICL) delivered to Bratislava is offered by a dealer who supplies Slovakia for 61,286 CZK excluding VAT, about 2,450€.

Unloading is not in that price. A crane or a truck with a hydraulic arm lifts the container off the lorry, booked and paid separately by distance and working time. The container needs a level, firm base so the doors still close in five years, and a lorry has to be able to reach the spot.

What else your own container needs

  • Land. Your own or rented, with access for a lorry. You cannot put one outside a block of flats.
  • A lock and protection. Nobody watches a container on your land. Budget for a good padlock, ideally with a lock box, and a camera if the plot is remote.
  • Insurance. Home insurance often does not cover things in a container on your plot; check your policy.
  • Ventilation. A closed steel box "sweats" in winter and spring: water condenses on the ceiling and walls. Without vents, boxes, furniture and textiles get damp.
  • Time. Ordering, delivery, unloading and the base take days to weeks. A unit with us is rented online in about 10 minutes.

What the building act says

Slovakia's new building act (25/2025 Z. z.) has applied since 1 April 2025. The ministry explains that a container simply standing on a plot is a movable item, not a structure. Once it is fixed to the ground, for example on concrete footings, it becomes a structure and the rules of the building act apply to it, such as a notification to the building office.

Even for a container that only stands on the ground, call the municipality before you buy. The zoning plan, the distance from the neighbour's boundary and in some places the look of the street decide. Removing a container that is already there costs more than asking first.

A container storage unit with us: what you get

Our container storage units are shipping containers converted into storage: ventilated, with a steel ceiling at 2.60 m, on fenced sites with recording cameras. You lock the unit with your own padlock and only you hold the key; access is 24 hours a day. Insurance up to 2,000€ is included. The containers are not heated, so they suit things that do not mind frost. What goes where is in our article on container or indoor storage unit.

A whole 20-foot container corresponds in size to our 14.40 m² unit with a 6.00 × 2.40 m floor and double doors of 2.25 × 2.30 m. At Pionierska these are on the ground floor and you drive right up to the doors. Half that size, 7.20 m² with a 3.00 × 2.40 m floor, is available at Dúbravka, Kaukazská and in Nitra. All sizes and photos are in our article on container storage unit rental in Bratislava.

Buy or rent: the comparison

The price of the container alone delivered to Bratislava, about 2,450€ excluding VAT, equals roughly 18 months of our 14.40 m² unit at Pionierska on the 12-month rate. Add unloading, a base, a lock and insurance to the purchase, and nothing to the rental: the gate, the cameras, our sealed padlock and insurance up to 2,000€ are included. On the other hand, the container stays yours after the years and can be sold.

Unit prices on 1 November 2026, per month on a 1, 6 and 12-month term. Prices exclude VAT: 23% VAT is added where the location's landlord is VAT registered, always in Nitra, in Bratislava for companies with a VAT number.

Common mistakes

  1. A container without land. Buying the container and then looking for a place to put it is the most expensive order.
  2. A price without unloading. "Free delivery" often means to the gate; the crane is another invoice.
  3. A container straight on grass. Without a level base the frame twists and the doors stop sealing.
  4. No ventilation. A closed container without vents gathers condensation and things get damp.
  5. Asking the municipality afterwards. A container fixed to the ground without a notification is an unauthorised structure.
  6. A container for a few months. For a move or a renovation buying almost never pays off: selling and removing it cost time and money.

When buying a container makes sense

  • You have your own land and need the things there: garden tools, a cottage, a farm, a workshop by the house.
  • Storage for many years, when the total rent approaches the price of the container and selling it later returns part of the money.
  • A building site, where the container moves with the work and the materials have to be at hand. If the materials are waiting for the work to start, first read about building material storage.
  • You need a conversion into a workshop, an office or living space. A unit with us is for storage only.

How to decide

  1. Work out how long you need the space: months or years.
  2. If years, check that you have land with lorry access and what the municipality says.
  3. Ask for the price of the container including delivery, unloading and the base, not the container alone.
  4. Compare it with a unit of the same size for the same time, with insurance and a lock.
  5. If renting wins, choose a unit on the location page by floor size, door and floor level.
  6. Fill in your details and pay by card, bank transfer or QR payment. The contract starts with the first payment and you get access at once; the whole thing takes about 10 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 20-foot shipping container cost?

"As is" units sell from about 1,300€ without delivery, a cargo-worthy container delivered to Bratislava for about 2,450€ excluding VAT. Unloading by crane is paid separately.

Do I need a permit for a container?

According to the ministry, a container standing on the ground is a movable item, not a structure. Fixed to the ground it becomes a structure and the building act applies. Ask your municipality before you buy.

Is it better to rent or buy a container?

For a few months up to a year or two, renting a unit works out better: the price of the container alone with delivery equals roughly 18 months of our 14.40 m² unit. For many years and on your own land, buying can pay off.

Do you rent out containers to take away?

No. We rent storage units inside containers that stand on our sites. We do not take a container anywhere or bring one to you.

Will the contents of a whole container fit in a 14.40 m² unit?

Yes, the 6.00 × 2.40 m floor and 2.60 m height roughly match the inside of a 20-foot container. The 2.25 × 2.30 m double doors take furniture and pallets too.
