What to do with your bicycle when the season ends

Cycling is one of the most popular forms of transport and active leisure in Slovakia. Yet every year, the arrival of cold weather brings the same question — where can you safely store your bicycle so it is ready to ride come spring? The "leave it on the balcony" or "shove it in the basement" approach often ends with rust, cracked tyres and expensive repairs.

The situation becomes even more challenging when the whole family rides. Three or four bicycles simply have nowhere to stand in a city flat. In this article, we explain how to properly prepare your bicycle for winter storage and where to keep it so you find it in perfect condition next spring.

Preparing your bicycle for storage

Proper preparation is half the battle. A few minutes of care at the end of the season will save you hours and tens of euros on spring repairs.

  • Wash the entire bicycle thoroughly — frame, wheels, chain and derailleurs. Use a gentle degreaser to remove caked-on dirt and oil from the chain. Allow the bicycle to dry completely after washing.
  • Once dry, lubricate the chain, derailleurs and all moving parts with a quality bicycle chain lubricant. A thin layer of oil on the frame will protect the paintwork from moisture.
  • Shift the chain onto the smallest sprockets at both the front and rear — this relieves tension on the cables and derailleur springs.
  • Release the brake callipers so the pads are not pressed against the rims or discs during storage.
  • Inflate the tyres to the pressure indicated on the sidewall. If the bicycle will be standing on its wheels, periodic pressure checks during winter will prevent tyre deformation.
  • Remove accessories — lights, cycle computer, bottle, saddle bag. Store electronics separately in a dry environment.

Where you should definitely not store your bicycle

Not every spot around the home is suitable for bicycle storage. Some seemingly practical solutions can do more harm than good:

  • An unglazed balcony — exposes the bicycle to rain, snow, frost and direct sunlight. Conditions are no different from outdoors, and over the course of a single winter the paint, chain and cables can suffer serious damage.
  • A damp basement — high humidity accelerates corrosion of the chain, cables and bearings. Mould can damage the saddle and grips.
  • An unheated garage — extreme temperature swings and condensation on metal surfaces cause the same problems as a balcony.

Ideal conditions for bicycle storage

For your bicycle to survive the winter unscathed, several basic conditions need to be met:

  • Stable temperature without extreme fluctuations — ideally in the range of 5–20 °C.
  • Air humidity not exceeding 65 %, to prevent corrosion and mould growth.
  • Protection from direct sunlight, which degrades rubber and plastic components.
  • Sufficient air circulation to prevent condensation.
  • Isolation from precipitation and any liquids.

How to arrange your bicycle in a storage unit

Inside a storage container, you have several options for positioning your bicycle:

  • On the floor — the simplest method. Simply stand the bicycle on its kickstand or lean it against the wall. Suitable if you have a sufficiently spacious unit.
  • On the wall — using wall-mounted hooks or brackets. This saves floor space and allows you to fit more bicycles into a single unit.
  • Vertically — front or rear wheel pointing upward. The most efficient use of space, ideal for families with multiple bicycles.

TOP SKLAD containers have a height of up to 3 metres, allowing comfortable vertical hanging of even larger bicycles. A single container from 3.5 m² can comfortably hold an entire family's gear — bicycles, scooters, helmets and cycling accessories.

Tip for cycling families

If you are storing bicycles for the whole family, consider a larger container. Alongside the bikes, you can comfortably fit children's bike seats, scooters, helmets, cycling shoes and other seasonal gear. With container heights of up to 3 metres, bicycles can be hung vertically, freeing up floor space for everything else.
