At the end of October everything comes in from the garden at once: the mower, the strimmer, the hoses, the rakes, and then the table and chairs and the rattan sofa. There is no room for it in a flat, and in the cellar it is in the way until spring. How to store garden tools over winter comes down to three questions: what survives frost in an unheated container, how to put the mower away without fuel, and which unit takes the furniture and the machines together.

We go through them in that order, with the sizes and prices of free units as of 24 September 2026.

What survives frost in a container and what does not

The containers in Dúbravka, at Pionierska, Kaukazská, Gessayova and in Nitra are unheated, so in winter they are almost as cold as outside. The indoor units at Holíčska 7 and Tomášikova 50D are inside a building that stays at a comfortable temperature in summer and winter. Sort your garden things by that before you pick a unit. The size and price of every free unit are in the storage rental price list.

• Fine in frost: hand tools (spades, rakes, hoes, shears, saws), metal and wooden garden furniture, synthetic rattan, a grill without its gas bottle, a wheelbarrow, a ladder and empty flower pots.
• Fine in frost once the water is out: hoses, the irrigation pump, the sprayer, the pressure washer. Water left inside freezes and splits the hose, the connectors and the pump housing.
• Batteries do not belong in the cold. Take the batteries of your cordless tools and robot mower home and keep them partly charged at room temperature. If a battery cannot be taken out, the whole machine goes into an indoor unit.
• Plastic turns brittle in frost. The cold does not hurt plastic chairs, watering cans and hose connectors, a knock does. Store them where nothing rests on them and nothing can fall on them.
• Cushions and fabric go into storage only when completely dry, in a breathable bag or a box. A damp cushion goes mouldy over winter in a container and in a cellar alike.

The mower: an empty tank and no fuel can

Our terms of service do not allow flammables, petroleum products, pressure vessels, chemicals or plants in a unit. For the garden that means four concrete things:

• A petrol mower or strimmer goes in with an empty tank. Drain the fuel and let the engine run until it stops by itself, so no petrol is left in the carburettor. Fill up with fresh fuel in spring.
• The petrol can and the two-stroke mix stay at home or in a garage, even empty, because of the fumes.
• The grill's gas bottle is disconnected and stays at home. The grill itself may go in, ideally cleaned and dry.
• Fertilisers, sprays and plant protection products do not go into the unit, and neither do pots with plants in them. They need somewhere else to spend the winter.

Clean the mower before you store it: scrape the dried grass from under the deck, check the blade and wipe the metal parts with a thin film of oil, then take the bottle home. With an electric mower it is enough to clean the deck and take the battery out. A robot mower can go in with its charging station, but the battery goes somewhere warm.

Do not carry a heavy mower up stairs. The containers in Dúbravka, at Gessayova and at Kaukazská are on the 1st floor, up a flight of stairs, and the car only gets onto the site. At Pionierska the 3.60 m² containers are on the ground floor and you park right at the door, and the same goes for container K7 at Kaukazská and the units in Nitra. At Tomášikova the car drives onto the site and the indoor units are on the ground floor; at Holíčska the car stays in the car park outside the site.

Indoor unit doors are 0.80 × 1.95 m, container doors 0.80 × 2.00 m. An ordinary mower passes through them, a wider machine only through double doors of 2.25 × 2.30 m. Today the free units with double doors are P32, P36 and P38 at Pionierska and K7 at Kaukazská (14.40 m², ground floor) and N41 in Nitra (7.20 m²).

Garden furniture: synthetic rattan, wood and metal

• Synthetic rattan is woven polyethylene and survives winter in an unheated container. Wash it, let it dry completely and cover it with something breathable, an old sheet or a fabric cover. Under plastic sheeting condensation collects.
• Natural rattan and wicker dislike damp and sharp swings in temperature. They belong in an indoor unit at Holíčska or Tomášikova.
• Wooden furniture should be cleaned and dried, and if you oil it, do it well before storage or in spring, not just before it goes in. Stack the chairs and take the legs off a table that has screwed legs.
• Metal furniture should be checked for rust, damaged spots treated and folding chairs folded.
• The parasol goes in closed, in its cover. A long pole on a base needs height: a container has a solid steel ceiling at 2.60 m, while the indoor units have no ceiling of their own. How that works is in the article on what high ceiling storage gives you.

Which size for what

On our services page we recommend 5 to 7 m² as a replacement for a large garage or cellar, including for garden machinery. In practice it depends on how much furniture goes in with it. As of 24 September 2026, these units are free, for example:

• Hand tools, hoses and cordless tools without their batteries: indoor unit T57 at Tomášikova, 1.20 m² with a 1.20 × 1.00 m floor. Spades and rakes stand upright, the wall is 2.60 m and the unit has no ceiling of its own.
• A mower, tools and cushions: H17 and H22 at Holíčska, 1.82 and 1.85 m² with a 1.46 and 1.48 × 1.25 m floor.
• A table with four to six chairs, the parasol and the mower: a 3.60 m² container with a 2.40 × 1.50 m floor. P9, P13 and P14 at Pionierska are on the ground floor with the car at the door; D47, D50, D53 and D56 in Dúbravka are on the 1st floor.
• A rattan corner sofa, loungers, the grill, the mower and all the tools: 7.20 m² with a 3.00 × 2.40 m floor. N41 in Nitra is on the ground floor with double doors; K27A and K27D at Kaukazská are on the 1st floor, up the stairs.

Watch out for the cheapest boxes at Holíčska. They cost from 28€ a month, but they are only 1.01 to 1.20 m high with a 0.80 × 1.00 m hatch. A spade or a rake will not stand in them; a box of gloves, seeds and small tools will.

How many months: October to April

The garden goes into storage in October and comes out in March or April. We rent for 1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, or exactly to a date you choose. The longer the term, the lower the monthly price. On container P9 at Pionierska it looks like this as of 24 September 2026:

• 1 month: 75€
• 6 months: 64€ a month, 384€ in total
• 12 months: 48€ a month, 576€ in total

Prices change every day with the occupancy of the site, and you always see the exact price before you confirm the order. The monthly price on a 1, 6 and 12-month term:

• T57, Tomášikova, 1.20 m²: 56€, 50€ and 45€.
• H17, H22, Holíčska, 1.82 and 1.85 m²: 54€, 48€ and 43€.
• H43, H44, Holíčska, 2.25 m²: 70€, 64€ and 59€.
• D47, D50, D53, D56, Dúbravka, 3.60 m² container on the 1st floor: 74€, 64€ and 48€.
• P9, P13, P14, Pionierska, 3.60 m² container on the ground floor: 75€, 64€ and 48€.
• N41, Nitra, 7.20 m² on the ground floor with double doors: 85€, 75€ and 64€.
• K27A, K27D, Kaukazská, 7.20 m² on the 1st floor: 108€, 97€ and 86€.
• P32, P36, P38, Pionierska, 14.40 m² on the ground floor with double doors: 167€, 143€ and 131€.

With the first payment you pay a deposit of one month's rent, returned within 5 working days after the unit is properly handed back. Insurance of your things up to 2 000€ is included. For more expensive machinery, such as a robot mower or a set of cordless tools, you can add cover up to 5 000€ for 4.50€ a month, up to 7 000€ for 7.50€ or up to 10 000€ for 12€. Common mistakes

1. Petrol in the tank and a can beside it. Flammables and petroleum products are not allowed in a unit. Empty the tank and let the engine run dry.
2. Water in the hose and the pump. Frozen water splits the connectors and the pump housing. Drain everything and let it dry.
3. A battery in the frost. In an unheated container the battery suffers, so take it home or choose an indoor unit.
4. Wet furniture under plastic. Moisture condenses under sheeting all winter, and in spring you find mould on the cushions and rust on the fittings.
5. Hooks drilled into the wall. The terms of service forbid drilling into walls, ceiling and floor. Stand long tools in a bucket or a freestanding rack.
6. A heavy mower on the 1st floor. That floor is reached by stairs. For heavy machinery choose a ground-floor unit with the car at the door.

When a different unit suits you better

• You only have hand tools and a hose. You do not need a container: a small indoor unit such as T57 or H22, where the tools stand upright, is enough.
• Most of your machinery runs on batteries. Instead of a container, take an indoor unit at Tomášikova, where the machines spend the winter warm and whole and the car drives onto the site.
• The furniture is natural rattan or wicker. Into an indoor unit, not a container.
• You only need it until spring. Do not take a year: six months or a rental to an exact date is enough.

How to go about it

1. List what is going into storage and split it into things that survive frost and things that need to be warm.
2. Prepare the mower and the strimmer: an empty tank, a clean deck, the batteries home.
3. Measure the largest piece, the table, the sofa or the mower, and compare it with the floor and doors of the free units on the location page.
4. For heavy machinery choose a ground-floor unit where the car pulls up to the door.
5. Choose the term: 6 months for the winter or exactly to the date you go back to the garden.
6. Fill in your details and pay by card, bank transfer or QR payment. The contract starts with the first payment and your access details arrive at once; the whole thing takes about 10 minutes.
7. Bring your things, heavy at the bottom and light on top, and lock the unit with your own padlock; you get a sealed padlock from us as a gift.

How much does storage for garden tools cost over winter in Bratislava?

As of 24 September 2026, indoor unit H22 at Holíčska costs 48€ a month on a 6-month term, 288€ for the whole winter. A 3.60 m² container for the furniture and the mower costs 64€ a month on six months, 384€ in total. Prices change with occupancy.

Can I leave the mower in the unit with petrol in the tank?

No. The terms of service do not allow flammables or petroleum products in a unit, so the mower goes in with an empty tank after the engine has run dry. The fuel can stays at home.

Does synthetic rattan furniture survive winter in a container?

Yes, the polyethylene weave handles frost as long as it is clean, dry and under a breathable cover rather than plastic. Natural rattan and wicker are better off in an indoor unit at Holíčska or Tomášikova, where the temperature stays comfortable in winter.

Will a lawn mower fit into the smallest unit?

The boxes from 28€ are 1.01 to 1.20 m high with a 0.80 × 1.00 m hatch. A folding electric mower with the handle down may fit, so measure it. For a petrol mower with a grass box, indoor unit T57 or H17 with a 0.80 × 1.95 m door is the safer choice.

Is garden machinery in the unit insured?

Yes, insurance up to 2 000€ is included in the rent. For more expensive machinery you can add cover up to 5 000€ for 4.50€ a month or up to 10 000€ for 12€ a month.
