Scooters in winter — why leaving them on the balcony is a bad idea

Kick scooters and electric scooters have become an integral part of city commuting and active leisure. In families with children it is common to own three, four or even more scooters of varying sizes. When winter arrives they all need to be stored somewhere — and a city flat simply was not designed for that.

Worse still, improper storage — especially of electric models — leads to battery damage, corrosion and non-functioning brakes come spring.

How to prepare a scooter for winter storage

Kick scooters

  • Thoroughly wash the entire scooter — frame, wheels, brakes. Allow it to dry completely.
  • Lubricate moving parts (bearings, folding mechanism) with a drop of oil.
  • Inflate tyres to the recommended pressure. If the scooter has solid wheels, check for wear.
  • Wipe metal surfaces with an oiled cloth or WD-40 spray to prevent corrosion.

Electric scooters — special attention to the battery

  • Charge the battery to 60–80 % — neither a full charge nor a full discharge is suitable for long-term storage.
  • Check the charge level every 2–3 months and top up to 60 % if it drops.
  • If the battery is removable, store it in a dry place at 10–20 °C. Extreme temperatures shorten its lifespan.
  • Protect the electronics from moisture — never store an e-scooter on an open balcony.

Ideal storage conditions

  • Temperature 10–25 °C without sudden swings — critical for lithium-ion batteries.
  • Humidity below 60 % — higher levels cause metal corrosion.
  • A ventilated space shielded from direct sunlight.
  • Vertical or hanging storage — saves floor space.
